POST-OP LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Including...
Ultrasound
You many notice a hardness or lumpiness to the areas treated with liposuction or Smart-lipo, especially in the abdominal area and even more so if combined with other body contouring procedures (such as fat injections for what is popularly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift) This is normal right after your procedure. This post-surgical lymphedema is caused by inflammation and trauma from the cannula (instrument that sucks out the fat) moving under the skin. Channels are formed by the cannula that can fill up with fluid and the tissue also becomes swollen. Manual Lymph Massage helps to move the fluid by gently pumping it back into the lymph vessels. Reducing the swelling can reduce discomfort.
Without Lymph Massage (LDT or MLD) the inflammation can evolve intofibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a seroma ( pocket of serum) can form. Many doctors prescribe Lymph Drainage Therapy after liposuction to make sure their patients get the best possible results from their procedure.

Lymphatic Massage
After surgery, your Doctor may prescribe a lymphatic massage to most patients. A lymphatic massage is the best way to ease swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgeries such as Liposuction or Abdominoplasty. While this detoxification process can boost immunity at any given time, it’s particularly helpful after these types of surgeries.
What is a Lymphatic Massage?
Some patients experience post-surgery accumulation of liquid or tissues beneath the skin that can harden. The resulting fibrosis can cause bruising or soreness. Lymphatic massage is a type of gentle massage that encourages blood flow and lymph drainage to help relieve this fibrosis. Once the lymph is drained, the reabsorption process begins. The waste tissue will be carried back toward the heart and, ultimately, naturally removed from the body. Lymphatic massage is a very safe and effective way to speed the healing process and improve comfort post-surgery.
Swedish Massage
Otherwise known as “classic massage” used to support the long-term health and rehabilitative care of individuals and athletes. Firm but gentle pressure is used with long flowing movements for total relaxation. Increased circulation and relief of muscle tension are results of this massage.
Deep Tissue Massage
Focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. The movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. Some soreness may occur after the massage.
Pregnancy Massage
Specifically tailored for the expectant mother’s needs. It is also called pre-natal massage. The mother’s body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding. Proper positioning ensures comfort and safety for the mother and baby.
Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Many hospitals are now incorporating Reiki Sessions to help people with many illnesses.
Reflexology
Reflexology is an alternative therapeutic treatment based on the idea that the body has an inner network of reflex points that connect to other organs. The reflex points that are targeted are in the hands, feet and ears, but are connected to body systems and internal organs, from the lymphatic system to the bladder. In a reflexology treatment session, pressure is applied to certain sections of feet, hands or other areas. As a result of the body’s natural reflex zones, the correlating body system or organs benefit from the pressure.
